Posted by Louise FrancoThe article presents a good, if pessimistic take on the current MidEast mess and how it came to be. It's one person's point of view but it pretty accurately presents the situation now. I'd quarrel with some details ( The Yom Kippur war did not exactly leave the Arab states weaker when it came to peace treaties; peace with Syria is a necessity too; Arafat could have dismissed the Sharon visit as that of a nut, rather than starting another intifada), The settlements are a major stumbling block and the Israelis need to stop them now and start bringing the settlers back to Israel proper. But a Palestinian state, necessary though it is, is not going to stop suicide bombers.
Focusing entirely on the Israeli perspective, this opinion piece charts out a version of Israel's failure to secure peace with the Palestinians that is about political ideology. Fascinating read.
