Hillary Clinton Doesn't Listen to Economists

When asked this morning by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos if she could name a single economist who backs her call for a gas tax holiday this summer, HRC said "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists."

Reich raises a troubling point: in trying to be a good ol' girl saying she doeesn't listen to politicians, Clinton gives the appearance of ignoring the facts to pander to the popular solution.

I wondered if Reich would make the comparison between Clinton's remarks and George Bush's well-known penchant for ignoring disagreeable facts. And he does. I saw a clip of this interview last night, and worse than this remarkable statement, was the fact that she called the economists "elitist" about five times in a single sentence. Clearly aimed at Obama, it was as tacky a political performance as I've seen this year. But Reich nails this part of the issue fairly and squarely.

Robert Reich was the Secretary of Labor in Bill Clinton's cabinet and is a long time friend of both of the Clintons (having even dated Hillary in college before she met Bill). He currently teaches Economic Policy at UC Berkeley.
