Why I'm not delighted by Sawyer move

(CNN) -- Diane Sawyer now joins Katie Couric as anchor of a major network evening newscast, leaving Brian Williams the sole man.

Since I have personally worked for 30 years for the advancement of women in broadcast journalism, I guess I am supposed to be delighted. Why am I not? Full Story »

Broadcast reporter and occasional anchor Carole Simpson discusses Diane Sawyer's being named anchor for ABC News, leaving only one man in the network news role in the evening slots. She gives good background but then takes the easy way out, stating that women achieved this new status because network news is on life support. She doesn't delve into why it is in such sorry state or provide facts to back up that assertion. Otherwise, her insider look at women is very enlightening.

She leaves out Jessica Savitch who hosted Frontline on PBS and was weekend anchor of NBC Nightly News during another male co-anchor rivalry between Roger Mudd and Tom Brokaw.
