Anne Applebaum gives her full support to those insisting that the war in Afghanistan must be won. She speaks openly of "war", defines "winning", and proposes an ambitious agenda to president Obama. Solid reasoning, still without taking the impact of Afghans and Afghan sentiment sufficiently into account.

I suppose Afghan sentiment will depend on how president Obama conveys the right message to the Afghan people. His main concern should be to win the hearts and minds of the Afghans.

Weak call for Obama to wade deeper into Afghan quagmire. Applebaum seems not aware other options of how best to lower the level of instability in Afghanistan may be available but are not being considered by Obama, even though the cost to the US would be far less.

Obama probably will squander hundreds more billions of dollars on this ill-considered military adventure, without even considering why Iran, Russia and China have not been brought forward to develop a strategy to bring minimal stability to Afghanistan. They have more at stake than does the US.
