An open letter to Charlie Gibson and George Stephanapoulos

With your performance tonight -- your focus on issues that were at best trivial wastes of valuable airtime and at worst restatements of right-wing falsehoods, punctuated by inane "issue" questions that in no way resembled the real world concerns of American voters -- you disgraced my profession of journalism, and, by association, me and a lot of hard-working colleagues who do still try to ferret out the truth, rather than worry about who can give us the ... Another reviewer suggests that the Dem candidates should repond to "questions" inserted by Fox News and the opposition. Nice idea in an honest medium, but the opposition is anything but honest. The "questions" are inserted only to drive the candidates "off message" and off the real issues, and besides, the candidates have already answered any such questions (at least any that make any sense) and have already debunked the nonsense. In any event, these "debates" have been a total failure from the start, unless one allows that the media, especially TV "news", have been working hard at controlling the electoral process - - in which case this article (written by a fellow news reporter) may be a small waker-upper to the arrogant media bosses who are eager to convey the impression that they, along with the dozens of wildly inaccurate and prejudiced pollsters do, in fact, control US voters. While TV should be the best medium for well designed political debates, it has become, in fact, the WORST. TV was once called a "wasteland". It has since been converted into a garbage dump. Setting aside the dismayingly intelligence insulting TV shows, TV news on the broadcast channels has become the font of conventional "wisdom", and much valuable real news that is ignored - - and all three major networks produce nearly identical newscasts. So you may choose to watch NBC, ABC, or CBS evening news programs depending in which anchor's smile you like best or whatever trivial taste suits your fancy. As for Charley Gibson, he is better suited for the ABC morning entertainment show whence he came, and perform where he can do little harm or waste any more of our time. And as for George Step - - well, he's so worthless he should simply disapper altogether. Lesson: NEVER WATCH FAKE DEBATES ON TV. Turn of the TV and read a good book !
