Moving the ceremony away from the downtown area capped off a chaotic day and was seen as a victory by protesters who did not want the torch to pass through the city without resistance. This is one of the few times I've been able to mark all the stars in the knowledge category. I was there yesterday too as an ACLU observer. The ACLU and other legal groups were there to make sure free speech rights were protected. Though I heard of a few arrests after I got home, the many SFPD officers I observed only intervened when they saw protesters climbing things. It appeared they had instructions not to let anybody get hurt. Other than that, they stood and watched. But many people were disappointed. I stood for hours by Chinese-American dance groups who showed up in their costumes and waited all morning to welcome the Chinese delegation.
