The author's contention that the U.S. is fighting terrorism on the wrong turf is hardly a new observation, nor does it provide an exit strategy out of the mess of political turmoil our presence has created in the Mid-East. The unstated objectives of our actions need be plumbed; how much are we willing (or are able) to pay for control of oil, how credible is an Iranian/Russian threat to our power, how does Israel's position affect our policy and how much and what type of trouble does our support of them create among other Arab states in the region?
