Outsourced passport work risky

The United States has outsourced the manufacturing of its electronic passports to overseas companies -- including one in Thailand that was victimized by Chinese espionage -- raising concerns that cost savings are being put ahead of national security, an investigation by The Washington Times has found.

The story raises some good questions and presents some good information. More information on the chips claims would help. They are not high science and US manufacture should have been possible. The question is quickly bypassed as to why the US government is arranging the outsourcing of the printing and manufacturing labor to outside the country. There is no mention of pay levels, hours, benefits, nor any lack of environmental laws that may allow cheaper manufacture.
