No Torture. No Exceptions: Wesley K. Clark

Today, in the struggle to finish off the extremists plotting against us, it won't be torture and fear that win the day for America. Far from it. Nations that torture end up despised and defeated. No, to win we'll have to live up to the values we profess, the belief in human rights, equal justice, fair trials, and the rule of law. These ideals are potent weapons. They will give us allies, friends, information, and security--but only if we live them. Full Story »

Another thoughtful, clear opinion piece against the practice of torture as currently practiced by the US government. As the author, former general Wesley Clark notes, "torture can take many forms, and it lives today. Incredibly, Americans are part of it. And we must put a stop to it." Torture is illegal, ineffective, and morally wrong.

A reasonable opinion piece from a respected U.S. military leader, who was also the supreme commander of NATO and a former U.S. presidential candidate. Wes Clark makes a thoughtful case for why torture is an ineffective and unfair way of serving the interests of the American public. It's hard to argue with him, though it would have been helpful to attempt to present a counter-point from an opposing view.

Same review as for the similar article by Chuck Hagel: they raise my esteem for the Washington Monthly. I wish Clark's and Hagel's message could be broadcast throughout the MSM. Most people, like most NeoCons, apparently, still believe torture is necessary to give us a better intelligence capability. Voter knowledge that the opposite is true, and that torture is encouraging warfare against the U.S., would quickly reverse our foreign policy.

I believe that this is a very forthright, well written and persuasive opinion piece. I have a hard time, though, ensuring that mine is an objective review because I feel very strongly about this issue, am in complete agreement with Clark, and have held this belief for as many of my 64 years as I can remember.
