After the saga surrounding the months-delayed publication of the John McCain-lobbyist story, a story that was written about before The Times even published it and that ended with a whimper amid a cloud of public opprobrium (and that, in the end, was a tie with The Washington Post), one person involved with the story said the biggest fear, by far, was that they'd lose it. The article is a breathless narrative of the pressroom during a scoop. Good fodder for news dogs, but not news in itself.

Eloquent blow-by-blow of how NYT Metro editor Joe Sexton--who presides over a rather thankless job--and his team stayed with the story over the weekend to get it right before breaking it. And it's not whether or not a story breaks on the Web or in print, but that all's right before opening the floodgates.
