Colorado Residents Fight Uranium Mine

"How do you farm organically next to a uranium mine?"

Colorado lawmakers are considering legislation to place restrictions on uranium mining and require mining companies to prove they will restore groundwater aquifers to pre-mining quality before they receive permits for in-situ operations.

This article cites a "not in my back yard" issue concerning uranium mining in rural Colorado. The issue is complicated by difference between ownership of land and mineral rights in much of the West as well as the scare factor associated with anything nuclear. The article does not address any of the technical issues such as contamination from naturally occurring uranium or contamination and disruption associated with mining.
