US Attempt to Shoot Down Satellite Undermines Efforts to Ban Space Weapons, Reduces US Security

"The potential political cost of shooting down this satellite is high," said Laura Grego, an astrophysicist with UCS's Global Security Program. "Whatever the motivation for it, demonstrating an anti-satellite weapon is counterproductive to U.S. long-term interests, given that the United States has the most to gain from an international space weapons ban. This is a press release from a far-left advocacy group, and is not journalism, despite the efforts to make it sound like a news article. It ignores the very real need to develop means to protect the Earth against asteroids, comets, etc., headed toward it. Scientists consider this a very high priority, and that aspect would have to be brought out in any genuine news report.
