US Attempt to Shoot Down Satellite Undermines Efforts to Ban Space Weapons, Reduces US Security

"The potential political cost of shooting down this satellite is high," said Laura Grego, an astrophysicist with UCS's Global Security Program. The expense and danger of fanning the fires for expensive weapons systems in space makes this story important. Space war could make space unusable for the remaining life of the planet. The DOD greatly inflates the dangers from hydrazine, counting upon public ignorance. Hydrazine is commonly used on most satellites and space vehicles for small thrusters. The space shuttle uses hydrazine routinely.
