From a Republic to a Monty Python Parrot: Bush and Congress Transform America

When onlookers asked Ben Franklin what sort of government the constitutional convention had produced, he told them "A republic, if you can keep it." Well, we haven't. We no longer live in a constitutional republic. Full Story »

Dead on commentary for the lackluster federal government we have in our midst today. The Dead Parrot Skit has no relevance except as counterpoint to our democracy's current state. I did find the essay biting, however it is not undeserved. All branches of government have checked out over the takeover by the presidents office. The actions of the executive branch, the fear of the legislative branch of the negative reaction of the population if they are seen as one iota as supporting terrorists by the media... this place is hopeless - and the essay brings that home with a vengance. Enjoy !

Devastating, witty, and right on. I could not give it the score it deserves because I had to answer questions about balance and such that don't really apply to a piece like this. Though he skewers quite a few branches of government in a pretty even-handed manner, I doubt any of them would think it fair. However, as the person whose rights have been abridged by all these maneuvers--and the person it's written for--I appreciated it no end.

It is good strongly stated opinion, complete with a dead parrot. Is it really just sleeping?

If the question is, "Is this good journalism?", and all of the questions pertaining to "fairness" and such are to be considered in answer, then I suppose you'd be hard-pressed to say "yes". But as an opinion piece, it's brilliant. It's about as succinct a portrayal of exactly how completely around the twist this administration as led this country as I have seen. The Parrot Sketch anaology tends to trivialize the writer's argument, though, clever as it may be.

This blog post juxtaposed to a Monty Python skit about a customer in a pet shop arguing with the pet shop owner whether or not a parrot is dead or not, creates an amusing metaphor. A sad commentary on the state of our republic.

This opinion piece has little merit. The author is ignorant of U.S. history. If he knew even a minimal amount about past wartime Presidents, he would not be so clueless about the present. Perhaps the editors of this blog could require writers of this ilk to put a signed disclaimer at the top "I would have impeached Lincoln, Wilson and FDR for their much greater crimes against civil liberties".
