Certainly the outlook for democracy seems pretty bleak-and how could it be otherwise? The surest way to make a problem worse is to pretend it isn't there, which is exactly what our press and politicians have been doing; and the rest is, unfortunately, history. Full Story »

This opinion piece is really two pieces, one has the author venting his prejudices about American elections, which on the whole are honest and fair (there are of course some exceptions, but the author seems unaware of them--Illinois in 1960, for example). The recommendations in some instances are sensible (#9 would have prevented the Democrats from stealing Wisconsin in 2004 through the 30% voter registration in Milwaukee on election day), but in other cases are irrational (#8 on voter IDs directly contradicts #9, and voter IDs are not "Jim Crow": they have no fees or tests other than citizenship).

Some good ideas; a few grossly unrealistic and/or unneccesary. But the biggest problem with the article is that these ideas address only the "mechanics" of elections, which really are the least of the problems facing US democracy. Sadly, election fraud is just the latest step in democracy's decline in the US. Had the title of the article been "A 12-Step Program to Dissuade Election Fraud," I would have given it a higher rating (though my first sentence would still apply).
