France best, U.S. worst in preventable death ranking

France, Japan and Australia rated best and the United States worst in new rankings focusing on preventable deaths due to treatable conditions in 19 leading industrialized nations, researchers said on Tuesday.

If the U.S. health care system performed as well as those of those top three countries, there would be 101,000 fewer deaths in the United States per year, according to researchers writing in the journal Health Affairs. Full Story »

While it's interesting to know how we ranked, a link to the study or a brief discussion of methodology would have changed this story into a high quality story.

Excellent article. I've done similar work and found it equates to numbers I have found. If anything, however, it underestimates the problem.

Good but limited story. http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/abstract/27/1/58 is the address. Small registration fee. This is an update of a previous study that had been a bit better for our country, as I recall.

Excellent information, particularly now, when all the GOP candidates are making flat statements that the US has the best health care system in the world. A paragraph which included info about the study methodolgy and what exactly the study sponsor, the Commonwealth Fund is... a think tank... a health care institute or what.
