Tuning in late to an obituary on the radio, I recognized Oriana Fallaci’s famous and infamous career at once. Pearson’s tribute will clue in those who might not remember firsthand what a presence she was in the 1970s. Here is her famous interview with Kissinger, proof that even the most worldlywise are dying to give themselves away; her confrontation with The Ayatollah (there seemed to be only one, back then); and her less than meritorious remarks on Islam. As with many who hold strong opinions, as she grew older Fallaci grew more dogmatic, painting broader strokes with a bigger and bigger brush; but she seems to have found her role as gadfly fulfilling---in its way as revealing as the personal revelations she shunned. Pearson’s notice may inspire the reader to consider the various mixed messages and lessons that such a life provides.
