Is Darwin Losing the Battle With God?

Creationism in the Classroom

IN 2004, IN A RURAL ELEMENTARY-SCHOOL CAFETERIA decorated with murals of dancing milk cartons, members of Pennsylvania's Dover Area School Board shocked local constituents and the national scientific community with a small but significant change in its biology curriculum, requiring students to be made aware of "intelligent design."

At the time, I was a reporter working at the local newspaper. Seeking comment on the curriculum change, I faxed a ... Full Story »

Good story, well documented and presented by a competent investigative reporter. It's an important story in that it illuminates an important factor to be considered in the conduct of our American education policy. Regardless of moral or religious conviction, the definition of "science" per se is best left to the scientific community, which courts now understand as an overwhelming consensus against notions of I.D. Discussion of the implications of that definition can be continued in the public arena.

Article was well written. The subtext of providing a point on the focus of the TX textbook issues on the presentation of science is a tough one to pull off. Is there a stealth effort to remove evolution from the classroom? The naysayers indicate with their responses that there is nothing of that sort going on. the author comes to a different conclusion from their acts. This is not so much a science related article as it is a study in grassroots politics showing the impacts of an organized campaign that has no time limits. A well documented read and one that provokes thought and hopefully open discussion.

I quote from the article: “Eugenie Scott disagrees. "There is nothing fair about teaching kids about bad science. There is nothing fair about giving kids nineteenth-century science in a twenty-first-century classroom." “

This article is well written but suffers from a number of flaws. The author believes that Barbara Forrest is qualified to discuss evolutionary theory, which is not the case as she is not a biologist and has no working background in evolutionary theory other than her philosophical and religious views. The author also did not make an effort to study the current status of evolutionary theory. It is little used in mainstream biology, where the major question today is explaining why two cells with identical DNA develop differently. Evolutionary theory does have strengths AND weaknesses, as any modern biologist knows. The author should have studied the subject in order to provide a well-sourced article.
