Posted by Julian FriedlandDecent piece based on a personal 45 min interview with reporter. Could have done more to compare with the alternative plans or Obama and Clinton. But will certainly shift discussion to Edwards' advantage in these last days before the Iowa primary. Seems like a respectable proposal. Will be interesting to see if once again, the other two front runners will parrot his ideas.
This is NYT "he said, she said" journalism. Having stated Edwards' position rather fairly on Page 1, on Page 2 Gordon then selectively pull up sources that undermine Edwards' position. He neglects sources that would buttress Edwards' approach and neglects to get a variety of current responses to his plan. This is certainly important news, especially since Edwards reflects the wishes of the majority of Americans but the NYT in reporting in this manner subtly (or not so subtly) sabotages his message. I'm not the only one to point this out (see Hayden http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-hayden/edwards-first-major-candi_b_79202.html).
This is an excellent expose of the inexperience of Mr Edwards. The reporter gives ample quotes from the candidate and tries his best to put the candidate's remarks in a favorable light. But sufficient factual information is provide to show how uninformed Edwards is, and how ignorant of history. A carefully sourced and objective report.
A well written article that is very sympathetic towards Edwards, but does bring up some important questions about his plan for Iraq.
