Posted by Melva HackneyWhile I agree the article should be more coherently edited to make its excellent points sooner and more effectively, let me make one thing clear (Soapbox Time): Anyone who defensively denies the truth of the obvious parallels between the fear-based, 'anti-Bolshevik' fanaticism in National-Sozialist (=Nazi) Germany and the terrorism hysteria in neo-conservative America is woefully, willfully uninformed about world history and in irrational denial about the basic truth that underlies humansÂ’ Us vs. Them psychology. The human beings who shrieked "Sieg Heil" and committed atrocities under Hitler (and Stalin and every other nationalistic, would-be dictator) belong to the same human race that just burned down a house of worship packed with people in Kenya (a common atrocity in WWII) and who persecuted alleged "commies" and "reds" in the McCarthy era & now firebomb Middle Eastern grocery stores in L.A. & Brooklyn and (still) despicably threaten to lynch our black neighbors in places like Jena. I live and work Hitler's homeland, with the same kinds of people who believed the propaganda, who joined the Nazi party, who fought for Germany in WW II. Austrians (& Germans) then and now are human beings just like Americans: good, bad, friendly, unfriendly, honest, dishonest -- but there are a few clear differences. The Germanic pride & nationalism that Hitler's propaganda once fanned to fever pitch is a mere fraction of the flag-waving "Gawd Bless 'Merica!" sentiment one can find on any street corner (& sadly on so-called "news" channels) in the U.S. every single day. America is NOT better than any other nation, for our citizens and leaders are fallible human beings just like the rest of the worldÂ’s population. The problem is: we refuse to believe that, b-cuz we're (ta-dah!) AMERICANS, like we invented patriotism, like we and our government are perfect and other (more) civilized cultures don't really exist. Hence some Americans' "patriotic" refusal to believe that this article's well-researched facts have anything to do with the good-guy nation we've increasingly (willingly) ceased to be under Bush & Cheney. End of lecture -- let's please just TRY walking a mile in less-jingoistic, more-enlightened shoes. Maybe then we'll acknowledge the importance of being aware of such similarities. For (we claim) we never want such senseless acts of hatred to happen again....
