Posted by Louise Franco"They go to the ocean to fish but there ain't no fish - there's plastic. They then regurgitate it down the necks of their fledglings and it kills them. After the birds decompose, the plastic gets washed back into the ocean where it can kill again. It's a form of ghost fishing." Truly an apocalyptic scenario. What have we wrought?
The environmental destruction of the oceans and the ocean life tends to be an out of sight, out of mind subject. Our oxygen and food and much of the biodiversity of the planet come from the ocean, and we ignore it. The estrogen-active nature of many plastics covered here is still not known by many consumers. The bioplastic solutions should be more widely known. The story is well written and informative.
This scandal gets occasional ink, but not with any proposed action. There may be enough plastic here to make serious money for smart people who build robot harvesters to recover the oil that went into the plastic.
