Egypt: Economic Vegetarians

Red meat prices have risen dramatically in Egypt in recent weeks. Whether or not it's related to the current state of the global economy, it clear that many Egyptians are being pushed towards vegetarianism due to the high prices. Most of this blog post is excellent, providing context on the issue and providing coverage from Egyptian sources in translation. I think the post loses fairness at the end, surrounding the Israeli offer to export meat to reduce prices in Egypt. Both the quoted blogger and the author of this post allege an Israeli hidden agenda behind this offer, but neither provides any evidence or reason to be suspicious.

After I posted this review, Mr. Amr sent me a message to explain that his inclusion of the blogger's views about Israel was intended only to present a particular Egyptian view held by some, and that he actually was trying to remain objective on the matter himself. I agree with him that this is an important part of his story, and that it should have been included, but then the description of the possible Israeli motives as a "hidden agenda" should have been in the blogger's own words, ... Interesting blog post about the recent rise of red meat prices in Egypt. The author provides a factual and fair round-up of media and blogger reactions to this development, which has led many Egyptians to boycott meat until prices go back to normal.

Original perspectives and insights into how rising meat prices in Egypt are affecting its citizens and what they are writing, thinking and doing about. Presents a solid ground-level view of a daily crisis which could become a much bigger issue (if not resolved somehow soon). Interesting history included.

A fascinating post, that looks at the boycotting of meat in Egypt from a historical, and even international perspective. What's missing for outsiders (such as myself) is an explanation of why prices are rising in the first place. Is it collusion by butchers, environmental issues that are reducing meat availability, or something else?
