the statement "the u.s. still has a limited and achievable objective in afghanistan: securing a viable state and preventing al-qaeda from regaining its lost base." seems a contradiction of all that the writer lays out before in this piece. he describes at length why the taliban is unbeatable, but offers no tactics/strategy for his al-qaeda statement. his reasoning earlier seems perceptive and based on previous and current history there.
