Energy bill: No fast fixes for rising fuel costs

A compromise bill hammered out by the Senate has efficency incentives but no immediate relief for high oil and gas costs.

After months of wrangling, the Senate hammered out an energy bill Wednesday that includes a compromise on tax incentives for renewable energy. Despite small-business provisions remaining intact, the bill - scheduled for a Senate vote on Thursday - provides little relief to companies facing rising fuel costs. Full Story »

The story misses the boat. There are no fast fixes for rising fuel costs. The depletion of oil, the rise of world populations, the economic growth of India and China, the serious threat of global warming all speak to a higher imperative of changing behaviors and technology. Cheap petroleum is a now squandered wish for the impossible.
