US looks to reduce reliance on Karzai

With a new round of elections one week away — and Mr Karzai favoured to win another term — a less-enamoured Obama administration is already looking for ways to lessen US reliance on the Afghan president by working more closely with favoured ministers and bolstering the authority of provincial and local leaders, according to US and Afghan officials.
