While I'm glad that "we have a reliable and growing public benefit web infrastructure available to us", we should remember that the lifetime of both the commercial and public ventures takes place in "internet time". Whatever attracts eyes today may be gone tomorrow... it is a wild ride, indeed.

This piece is problematic. While highlighting important concerns, it fails to acknowledge the market forces that created and sustain sites like Facebook. Certainly not a scheme devised by members of the media cartel, social networks command so much traffic because they offer a service Internet users like and find useful.
