An Alternative to InDiggnation

NewsTrust.net, a not-for-profit that is moving into the news-rating turf staked out by sites like Digg, Reddit, and Newsvine, has landed a $450,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation and plans to add a tool in 2008 that will let users label stories as having a left-wing or right-wing slant.

Wonderful news! And an appropriate tribute to those who worked so hard not only to put NewsTrust on the map, but to make it the success it has become! Two questions: who could those “grain of salt” reviewers be? And when NewsTrust adds its new feature to the reviews, how is a naïve country boy living in the wilds of the Colorado mountains ever going to be able to determine which is “left wing” or “right wing”? That kind of judgment is for sophisticated West-coast, East-coast intellectual types.

This piece gives a decent summary of background information about NewsTrust, and provides quotes of what some people (including the founder himself) said about it. The piece would be more informative and interesting if the author said more about what NewsTrust actually is.
