By getting out now, he can collect big lobbying money in one year instead of having to wait two years, as he would under new congressional ethics regulations. Rep. Chip Pickering would have been Gov. Haley Barbour's certain choice to replace Lott had Pickering not announced three months ago that he would not seek a seventh term. Novak casts aspersions on Lott's claim that the two-year ban "didn't have a big role". He could have said "I'm not sure I believe him", and that would have been fine. But to say "He (Lott) hurt his credibility", that is unfair, because it says flat out that everyone knows Lott is lying. Frankly, Novak is not in a position to know one way or another. Other than that, this is a good story.
