Very nice commentary on a speech given by ex-Gov. Mario Cuomo about the assault on the rule of law by the Bush Administration, and about the duty of lawyers to fight them. This speech didn't get any attention I know of in the mainstream press. Too bad. There is such a limit on what is considered "serious" political discourse. I don't know why cockamamie ideas like bombing Iran are considered worthy of serious examination, yet it's somehow too far out to express concerns that the Bush Administration executive power-grab is putting American democracy at risk.

The lawyer known as "Looseheadprop" (a rugby term) provides here a first-hand account of Mario Cuomo's speech on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to 2,000 of the most influential lawyers in NYC. His speech apparently received little or no press coverage. Nevertheless, it was an important speech on accountability and leadership to an important audience.

An important story not covered by the msm, but the lead is buried. This was not just another critical analysis of the Bush administration; it was a call to [non-partisan] action: “There is a time to be silent and a time to speak. This is the time for lawyers to speak.”

This is a first-person account of Mario Cuomo's call for American lawyers to hit the streets, for the same reason their colleagues in Pakistan have done: the collapse of constitutional governance. Not at all covered by Traditional Media.
