Taliban control half of Afghanistan, says report

It said that the Nato force in the country needed to be doubled to 80,000 front-line soldiers who should be allowed to pursue militants into Pakistan.

The 110-page report said that its "exclusive" research found the Taliban controlled 54 per cent of Afghanistan. Full Story »

Interestingly enough, the Independent also had a story today on the exact same report. However, their story cast some doubt on the Senlis Council, saying, "The organisation had been regarded in the past as very much a fringe body with unrealistic policies." They did note, however, that their recommendations seem to be finding more favor of late. That story also included a few more viewpoints. You can read the other story at http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article3182330.ece I also found it interesting that the Afghan president publicly stated just a few days ago that Taliban groups have been "increasingly" contacting him to negotiate for peace terms. One of the two reports is wrong. I just can't say which.
