Corn ethanol goes from being a hero to a scapegoat

How is it that the ethanol industry went from joke to hero to goat in less than three years?

There are at least three things at work.

One is that corn-based ethanol is not, and never has been, an efficient fuel.
...
There has always been a question of whether the production of ethanol consumes as much, or more, energy than it delivers as a motor fuel.

This hits on every point relevant to corn ethanol, but doesn't say much about them. Good overview though. Not much in the way of sources.

The story captures the developing awareness about the problems with adopting ethanol as a common fuel. It is presented in a matter of fact manner. It is important in helping direct efforts and resources into renewable and non-polluting technologies.
