While the statistics I've read certainly agree with the need to calm down about Social Security, and the discussion of Social Security is certainly accurate, the growth of health care costs, especially pharmaceutical costs, is not the only impending financial disaster in this time of the foreclosure crisis.

This is about scare tactics. The real message: Philip Ellis: “The long-term fiscal condition of the United States has been largely misdiagnosed. Despite all the attention paid to demographic challenges, such as the coming retirement of the baby-boom generation, our country’s financial health will in fact be determined primarily by the growth rate of per capita health care costs.”

This opinion piece is poorly researched and uses invective in almost every paragraph against those with whom the author disagrees instead of argument. The following quote is so totally wrong one must doubt that the author knows anything about the subject: "the Bush administration tried to push through a combination of privatization and benefit cuts that would, over time, have reduced Social Security to nothing but a giant 401(k)" This is the total opposite of what was proposed. The author ignores the critically important fact that Social Security is heavily biased against black men, who pay in but collect very little benefits due to their lower life expectancy compared with black women and whites. Krugman, who would be as disposed as anyone else to look positively at Obama, is not hesitant to refute one of Obama's assertions. The column affects my view of Obama, making me wonder about his willingness to accept "common wisdom." I have e-mailed the column to friends who have put Obama at the top of their list or may be leaning toward him.
