White House turns to campaign tactics as support erodes for health care reform

The latest survey shows that the backlash in public meetings with politicians against health reforms is sapping support for the flagship policy of Barack Obama's administration.

In a USA Today/Gallup poll, 34 per cent of a sample of Americans said that sessions with members of Congress had made them more sympathetic to the views of protesters. Some 21 per cent had become less sympathetic. Full Story »

As Nate Silver, Marc Ambinder and others have pointed out today, the Gallup poll isn't an accurate indicator of health care reform approval, nor does it demonstrate whether the town hall protests have actually caused undecided citizens to "switch sides." (See links for more.) The Daily Telegraph also writes that "most Americans view the health care protesters as genuine and representative," then quotes Republican John Boehner to illustrate the point. The only source from the pro-reform side of the debate is Alexrod. Please.
