Very carefully constructed article which leads the lay reader through the circumstances behind this disclosure, and its possible implications, step by step. As my fellow reviewer points out, Tady does not editorialize, and the language is almost entirely neutral---but supplies plenty of information for the reader to form an opinion. The first thought is that the Ag Dept.'s suppression of the news for economic reason is a startling example of short-term thinking: by lagging behind the breaking news, instead of getting out in front of it, the economic damage may be even more severe---witness Japan's swift suspension of importing US rice, and in a country synonymous with this staple crop, that's not beans. Now, the exact dangers, if any, posed by these foods remains, as well know, contentious, and the reporter perhaps wisely doesn't go too deeply into that---it's debated extensively elsewhere. But it does make one wonder when government agencies like the Ag. Dept or the FDA will wake up to the astonishing fact that cover-ups nowadays are fated to get uncovered, with repercussions which transparency might have headed off.
