Note that Krugman's article is as much a condemnation of the media's distorted and "gotcha !" coverage of the candidates (and just about everything else) as it is of Giuliani's amateurish lies about prostate and breast cancers. Thank God for LIBERALS like some of the more sensible bloggers on the internet, and mainstream press pundits like Paul Krugman (NYT) and Joe Conason (New York Observer) all of whom have lambasted Giuliani for his scare tactics and falsehoods and have presented solid facts to reveal the truth. The right wing has labored mightily for decades attempting to convert the term "liberal" into a dirty word. But witness the latest political polls and see what their destructive attacks have now earned them: rejection by the electorate. Lately they are trying the same tactic with the term "socialized medicine". It will earn them the same proceeds in the 2008 election - - despite the fact that the media go along with the "argument", give them a pass, ignore the facts, and hide behind their transparent screen of false "objectivity". In this, as in so many issues, the press and TV media have failed miserably to investigate the facts, point them out openly and immediately, and serve the electorate as the Constitution has designated their role rather than their greedy and diminishing "bottom line". The near total failure of our media ranks along with the worst disasters in the past century in undermining our democracy. Self-reform may not be in the wind, but business disaster is around the corner.
