Where Does the Right-Wing End and the Media Begin?

What role if any do the media play in movement conservatism?

Paul Krugman: The media are a very important force... They shape perceptions, and they conceal issues. Look at the 2000 presidential campaign, for example, where the media were so heavily biased against Al Gore. That's what brought Bush to within a Supreme Court decision of the White House. ...[T]he role of the media in not telling you reasons why you should be skeptical about the ... Full Story »

Krugman is brilliant, read his resume'. If anyone wonders if media bias exists and also if it is radically right wing, check the coverage of the war protest in NYC 10/27/07.....nada...tens thousands travel to the city to walk in the rain protesting the Iraq mess and it is not news not a peep in the times or the Globe......what would the coverage look like if tens of thousands showed up to attempt to draft the Chene and Rumsfeld ticket in the upcoming presidential election.

A well-written article which effectively summarizes the role the media have taken for the past 7 years. Thanks in large part to their bias and support, ultra conservatism was able to take control of all three branches of government. And yes, the centralization of media ownership into six giant corporations, with the full encouragement of the Bush administration and the participation of the Bush FCC, greatly impacts the bias of media coverage, as well as entertainment.

Would have preferred some additional sources, but since I'm familar with the history and the details of the report, I had a fairly easy tine determining the truth of the statements. It's a good story, a little short and sparse, but it is an interview.

How many moons are there on this author's planet? Some where in the world of liberal writers world, hard data are not to be used, facts are to be ignored and truth is what we fell. How or why this Blog which is not one of the 5 most influential Blogs per CMU study is being sourced and Instapundit, Watcherofweasles, or donsurber are not tells me all I need to know about who hangs out at this site. It was a good idea but it is being killed by the "truther and the loons"

Maybe I expect too much from an interview but my interest is piqued to read Krugman’s writings to get a better sense of his credibility. As much as I would like to believe all of what is said by Mr. Krugman, and he does satisfy my hunger to explain why conservatives have made such headway in the political arena, I don’t see any rebuttal from the other side. In a way it is lacking any evidence to back up some of his key statements. Examples to support such statements as “If you say a true but unflattering thing about Bush or in fact about any other prominent conservative, oh, boy! People are going to go after you. I mean, I've got people working full-time going after me, right?” are not there. Here again I would rather read ... More »

How did this ever get into print? Mr Krugman is so far to the left that everything looks right wing to him, but that does not make anything he says true. His quote "Look at the 2000 presidential campaign, for example, where the media were so heavily biased against Al Gore." is so off the wall that one wishes that this piece could be rated zero. His "[T]here probably aren't, at networks other than Fox, ... memos saying here is how we are going to slant the news today -- at Fox there are, every day." must offend the people at ABC which does have such a Note and famously wrote about its need to slant for Kerry against Bush in 2004, that Mr Krugman does not know they exist. It is news to Washingtonians that the 100,000 circulation ... More »

I'm a close observer of journalism and Krugman makes a crucial point (quoted below) about Corporate Media's unwillingness to investigate and make judgments supported by facts. Corporate Media's concern for the appearance of evenhandedness makes it shy away from reporting facts that prove that conservative sacred cows are just plainly not true because they are not supported or are directly contradicted by the facts (intelligent design is science, Swift Boat veterans slander of Kerry's war record, climate change denial etc.) "the fetish of evenhandedness. If one candidate says something that's completely false, and the other something that's true, the media will say, "Some people believe what that guy said was false, and some ... More »

This was an interview, so the subject's (Paul Krugman's) opinions were stated without rejoinder. One-sided, yes, but appropriately so.
