There is no excuse for this sort of thing in a society that considers itself civilized. It's an embarrassment to all of us. One of Bob Herbert's best.

As a physician, I am extremely concerned about the lack of full access to health care in this nation. While the pharmaceutical industry makes profits much higher than most industries, they contribute highly to the poverty of our nation. Many physicians are also prevented from writing off care for those who cannot pay by insurance industry contracts and/or other employers. This story provides a dramatic example of these problems.
