When rightwing hate goes mainstream

The right is ever fond of pointing out that leftwing extremists have also been among us for lo these many years, from the Weather Underground during the Vietnam war to the 9/11 truthers of recent years. But such groups have never received an iota of support from Democrats.... By contrast, a mainstream conservative figure like Sarah Palin posts a map on her Facebook page of Democratic congressmen she wants defeated that is festooned with gun-sight ... Full Story »

Kennedy does hit on the core issue - Republican's willingness to accept and even embrace right-wing ideologies based in a twisted, racist narrative of America's past, and an unrealistic vision of the country's future.

This is an excellent opinion piece. Kennedy uses just the right tone to convey his message. Unlike the Corn opinion piece which was previously reviewed on NT (and is quoted by Kennedy), Kennedy conveys an intellectual, measured analysis of the impact hate speech can have on our society, most especially on our political scene. Quoting Potok from the Southern Poverty Law Center is especially effective in making the connection between hate speech and violent action. Kennedy's indictment of the GOP and their motivations is succinct and convincing.

Truthful and reasonably well-written, but nowhere near as compelling as the Corn piece previously reviewed. Given the previous Corn piece, it's also not as original.

The story by Dan Kennedy reminds us that being president of the United States is a high-risk enterprise, as Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F Kennedy all found out the hard way. Danger can come at a president from any number of directions. It can come from the lone deranged gunman. It can come too, theoretically, from international terrorism of any variety.

Since the '90's, the very core of the "Conservative Movement" has been no where near reality. It is mostly based on race-baiting, gay-baiting and red-baiting. There are several good books on this subject: The Death of Conservatism by Sam Tanenhaus, What's the matter with Kansas?: how conservatives won the heart of America by Thomas Frank and Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party by Max Blumenthal.

The truth hurts, it is no longer the bad apple that spoils the batch. The far right is damaging the United States, and it is time that the country as a whole realize this is no longer just politics nor a joke.

A good analysis of the current situation with the right wing hate groups and the Republican Party.
