Thanks to Big Government, the nation is stepping back from the economic abyss

We've managed to step back from the abyss and avoid a full replay of the Great Depression, writes columnist Paul Krugman. What saved us this time? The answer lies in the very different role played by the federal government. Full Story »

Generally, Krugman's articles are very easy to absorb and analyze; this one is no exception. He helps me continue to adopt a non-violent thought style by approaching subjects with facts. He invests a few words to point out that the Republicans - as a political force - have generally been focused on the health of their party at the expense of their constituencies. Krugman didn't even have to reach to the depths of metaphor in order to make his point. He just used the Republican admonition 'Big Government' and followed it with 'Reagan was wrong.' without as much as an exclamation point. The article is a good read and constructed of fact with a destination of opinion.

No exclamation point after Reagan was wrong. None needed (and not because it was obstructed by a colon) - it isn't big news to anyone who's been riding this rodeo; although they are fighting words to an ideologue that is tattooed with an elephant and genuflects when 'HIS' name is uttered or muttered, and there has been plenty of both. The argument is and always has been about corruption and dishonesty, not big, small or medium sized government. The repulsion of Big Government has taken on the scent of dogma rather than logic. How else would droves of people, actual current recipients of the People's good work and public health programs through Government be manipulated into fighting against their own best interests. Disrespectfully shaking their fists (as per instructions) in the faces of US Senators and displaying the ugliest Americans since the Civil Rights movement. Shame on us.

I’m still very worried about the economy. There’s still, I fear, a substantial chance that unemployment will remain high for a very long time. But we appear to have averted the worst: Utter catastrophe no longer seems likely. And Big Government, run by people who understand its virtues, is the reason why.

While worrying is not an activity I find useful – it is quite often the autonomic response fuse of our natural impulse of fight-or-flight. This is however, the essence of Krugman’s article and observations.
