A tortured stance on torture

Washington shuddered last week when The New York Times revealed that the Justice Department, under the direction of Alberto Gonzales, had undermined the will of Congress, the Supreme Court, as well as hard-won national and international standards with secret legal opinions supporting torture. "Shocking" was the word Republican Senator Arlen Specter used, and well he should.

This opinion piece,if anything, understates the outrage I feel over the torture tactics of our current administration. Black prisons? Very American. Sticking someone's head under water until they believe they are going to die? Also very American, eh? Beating someone with a phone book about the head? Why it's in our best traditions isn't it? It it WRONG. I was taught that doing the right thing can & often will cost a person. If some intelligence is missed the so what. That is the cost of true freedom & doing the right thing.
