So Who's Afraid of the Israel Lobby?

Nowhere is the Lobby's power more clearly demonstrated than in its ability to suppress the awful truth that on June 8, 1967 during the Six Day War:

Up to now, debate on the power of the Israel Lobby, and open debate on Israeli policy have been two related taboos untouchable in American public life. People's careers have been destroyed for bringing up these issues, and prominent speakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Carter, have been denied venues to speak or have been saddled with ridiculous conditions. The publication of Walt and Mearshimer's article in the London Review of Books (originally written for the Atlantic Monthly, which refused to run it) has opened the door to public debate on the lobby, and debate on Israel must as a consequence be opened up for public debate, as it should be. Perhaps the first opening is an investigative story, published in the Chicago Tribune, on the sinking of the U.S. Navy spy ship, the U.S.S. Liberty, in 1967. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-liberty_tuesoct02,1,4731731.story?coll=chi_home_top The ship was critically damaged, almost certainly with full knowledge that it was an American ship, by the Israeli Air Force during the 1967 war, for unknown reasons. The official investigation was squelched for political reasons, and critical voice tapes were destroyed. This may be the first time in 40 years that this story has been given the attention in the main stream press that it deserved.
