the reality of the consequences of global warming is in this story. since the particular consequences described here will not be experienced universally, it's difficult for many in our country to identify how imperative it is to do something now. this is a unique story for our lifetimes. the people of micronesia (and other places and other consequences) will become the sad casualties of a way of life for which inexorable steps have been taken over generations of civilization.
