Health Care for All?

In the summer of 1793, as Prussian and Hapsburg armies closed in on Paris, French leaders issued an unprecedented decree, ordering all unmarried men 18 to 25 years of age to take up arms, married men to make arms, women to sew tents and uniforms, and old men to "excite the courage of the warriors" and "preach the hatred of kings." France thereby transformed warfare from the business of professionals to the work of a whole nation.1

The author shows a historical perspective that has very little to do with the early 20th Century Labor, Suffrage, and The Great War to End All Post War Movements. The slaughter of that war coupled with the YOYO mentality largely promoted by the late 19th Century Robber Barrons and the ravings of the Religious Right on Radio that You're On Your Own Jack unless you're under Our Tent was only deepened by the Great Depression. That is the prime mover behind that generation's response to Pearl Harbor as they already knew of the idea of the Common Good as well as We are all in this together because the Great Depression demonstrated that to everyone including many who had been rich in the 1920's. What we've had since is the cancer of a corrosive political speech disguised as Conservative when in fact it is a Reactionary response to tear down what generations fought and bled for. It is no surprise that we see people taking class out of the picture and using a type of jigsaw puzzle history to defend our not doing the right thing for all Americans by filling in convenient blanks. Rich as well as White priviledge never accepts the personal responsibility they like to inflict on others. He fails to mention that Universal Healthcare was first voted down in 1948 by Republicans. It was supposed to be a logical addition to SSI, the GI Bill. In the end it's just another sales job by an upper class man too cheap to pay his fair share of taxes. Read Paul Krugman's The Great Unravellng if you want to learn about how we got where we are today.
