We need to know about exclusion of academics on the basis of their politics, something that is against the principles of our nation. It's unfortunate that Chancellor Drake would not comment for the story.

It is something of a smoking gun to the story that has garnered an editorial in today's New York Times supporting Chemerinksy and predicting doom for the as yet nonexistent UCI school of law. Chemerinsky has been supprted by scholars in every niche of the political spectrum; you can't run a serious academic, research and training facility with robots, ergo the deans need to be humans, with real opinions, and all seem to think C. has always been fair-minded and not even particularly far to the left of center. The name calling and slurs, as we have come to expect, come from the right—but not from those within academe

the story seems fair as far as it goes. what criteria govern the selection of a dean is not included. we don't know if it's the same criteria for teaching or something more (or less, or any). follow-up stories with more information could bring this issue to importance for our educational culture.

My biggest criticism with this article is that it is so narrowly reporting events that it does not reach conclusions about the big picture.
