Bye-Bye Baghdad

I have been living and working in Baghdad for the past 16 months and will be leaving next week for good. I am one of those overpaid Department of Defense contractors, or, as some would call me, a "war profiteer." Yes, I have profited. I am out of debt and have money saved. But it has cost me. Because it's so dangerous to report there, it's hard to get a really accurate view of what's really going on in in Iraq. This writer, likewise, does not have a firsthand view. But, by working with Iraqis every day, his view is probably more accurate than most we see. As one man's view of this man-made disaster, I can't hold it to normal journalistic standards, but found it deeply touching.

There is no doubt that the sectarian violence in Iraq has caused enormous pain to ordinary people. Our own revolution against Great Britain was even worse. We expect "instant" success over there, yet our own independance took 12 years.
