Winter puts together a coherent story on the controversy over Gulf deepwater aquaculture. Details are omitted for readability, apparently, and links would add depth for interested readers.

Aquaculture sounds good until you look into the full set of implications. Penned fish get sick and either infect wild fish or get antibiotics that get into all other wild organisms, as do commonly used growth hormones. Tamed, week pen fish escape and pollute the gene pool of wild species. Caution is in order.

Conservationists maintain that such farms could harm the environment, put native fish at risk and pollute oceans with fish waste and excess food. The plan has been criticized by more than 100 environmental and fishing organizations.
