I dispute the categorization of it ever being a good war. Every war is a failure of human society. Declaring a war good because you "win" it is not a moral code, it is a power code. Suckering sycophant states into sending soldiers so you can start the next war seems similarly dishonorable. There is some very good history of incompetance here.

This long retrospective article outlines the history of events in Afghanistan since 2001. It is, however, still not nearly long enough or detailed enough to tell the complex history it's trying to tell without grossly oversimplifying things
