Eight lessons the Iowa caucuses taught us

Washington Post - By Chris Cillizza - Jan. 04 (Opinion) - Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s 8-vote victory over former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum in the 2012 Iowa caucuses is only a few hours old — and already is one of the legendary results in the history of presidential politics.

The main lesson of the night was that every vote does indeed count and that the makers of “Swing Vote” — that horrific Kevin Costner movie — were smarter than we all gave them credit for.

But there were any number of other lessons that we learned (or re-learned) from the results in Iowa on Tuesday. Our lessons learned are below. What did you learn?
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

In foreign policy, there is often no right or wrong answer; the results of a policy are often ambiguous and its effectiveness is usually only determined by history. Still, there were a number of statements made by the candidates that were factually challenged, exaggerated or lacking context. Rick Perry wants to eliminate. Though the CNBC debate may only be remembered for the very awkward moment when Perry could only name two of the three on his list, here are some of the more dubious facts we heard last night — some of which were suggested by readers using #factcheckthis on Twitter or our Facebook page.
Washington Post - By Dan Balz - Sep. 19 (News Report) - The deficit-reduction speech President Obama delivered from the Rose Garden on Monday underscores the sharp strategic pivot he and his administration have made in the wake of the debt ceiling negotiations.

Call it lessons learned the hard way, or the necessary readjustment by a politician, but the Obama who spoke on Monday was in a far different place politically and stylistically from the president who tried to pull off a grand bargain with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) in July and August.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Calling themselves the Sensible Food Policy Coalition, the nation’s biggest foodmakers, fast-food chains and media companies, including Viacom and Time Warner , are trying to derail standards proposed by four federal agencies. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has also lent its lobbying muscle to the effort. He wanted a deal.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Post - By Ezra Klein - Jun. 29 (Opinion) - McConnell doesn’t need to be inspiring or jocular. Leonnig, Joe Stephens, Alice Crites - Jun. 26 (News Report) - With trips that began two months after he took office, President Obama has devoted more than half of his out-of-town private-business visits to promoting a single industry: clean technology, which the president says will lead the nation back to economic prosperity.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Post - By Jennifer Rubin - Jun. 22 (Opinion) - The Democrats’ “historic achievement,” shocking as it seems, turns out to be an expensive, jobs-crippling monstrosity that is filled with unintended consequences. It’s not going to bend the cost curve.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.2 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
