Village Voice - Sep. 04 - GOP candidates like Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Santorum don't believe in evolution or global warming.
H&M Apologizes for Destroying, Trashing Unsold Clothes, Sort Of

Village Voice - By Mackenzie Schmidt - Jan. 07 (News Report) - Whatever happened to all those unsightly metallic brown, fur-trimmed puffer jackets on the clearance rack at H&M? In all likelihood, they're probably out back in a garbage bag, fiberfill busting out of box-cutter slashes.

On Tuesday, the Times published a story on retail giant H&M's shady practice of purposely destroying and trashing brand new unsold clothes at their Herald Square location after a CUNY grad student, Cynthia Magnus, came forward with her discovery of bags upon bags of brand new, deliberately ruined clothing in the alley behind one of the store's 10 Manhattan outposts. Magnus had written to the Swedish company offering to help organize a charitable way for the store to donate the unsold items, but it was the Times that brought the situation at West 35th Street to the attention of pissed off shoppers, and supposedly, that of H&M spokeswoman Nicole Christie. Christie issued a shocked gasp of a statement denying any knowledge of the wasteful methods, and announcing an investigation of just the Herald Square location.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Tobia - Mar. 31 (Special Report) - Like many Americans, I never questioned the justness of our Afghan adventure. Basic logic: We invaded central Asia because of the horrors of 9/11. The Taliban sheltered bin Laden. They let Al Qaeda plot in safety. We had to kick their ass.

But eight years later, we're still there, and I had no idea why. Conversations with smart people in the U.S. got me nowhere. They talked of "geopolitical ramifications" and "bookending Pakistan." What the hell does that mean?
NewsTrust Rating: 4.2 average - 9 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Village Voice - By James Lieber - Jan. 28 (Special Report) - It's 2009. You're laid off, furloughed, foreclosed on, or you know someone who is. You wonder where you'll fit into the grim new semi-socialistic post-post-industrial economy colloquially known as "this mess."

You're astonished and possibly ashamed that mutant financial instruments dreamed up in your great country have spawned worldwide misery. You can't comprehend, much less trim, the amount of bailout money parachuting into the laps of incompetents, hoarders, and miscreants. It's been a tough century so far: 9/11, Iraq, and now this. At least we have a bright new president. He'll give you a job painting a bridge. You may need it to keep body and soul together.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.6 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Republican frontrunner is campaigning for president by evoking that visual at every campaign stop, and he apparently believes it's a picture worth thousands of nights in the White House.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Miami New Times - By Rob Jordan - Mar. 07 (Special Report) - Just as the sun was reaching its highest point in the sky, Lou Greenwell realized he could see again.

During a morning spent paddling across Blackwater Sound just off Key Largo, Greenwell, 70 years old, had begun to wonder if there was any end to the shadowy mass that stretched in every direction across the once-transparent waters. Then, in the shallows on the sound's far west side, little sand sharks appeared below the suddenly clear surface. Not-so-little barracudas rushed around Greenwell's banana-yellow kayak. One shark rested under a mangrove root, heedless of its visitors.

Greenwell was headed toward the Bogies, one of his favorite spots on earth. This narrow waterway has been a regular stop in the 40 years he's been swimming, fishing, diving, and kayaking the waters of Florida Bay. Forming a perfect canopy, massive, gnarled mangroves reached across the narrow passage as if longing for each other's embrace. Tiny warblers hopped from branch to branch, dancing between shadows and shafts of light. "You can get your prayer book out here," Greenwell said softly. "It's like a chapel."

It was in this chapel not long ago that Greenwell had a transformative experience. Leading a group of fellow kayakers in silence, he came upon something massive and still. With a swirl of water and mud, it became two massive things: a manatee and her baby, shyly making a delayed getaway. "It was the cutest thing," he said.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Village Voice - By Tristan Taormino - Aug. 17 (Opinion) - Conservatives are winning most of the battles over sex education. Abstinence-only programs have gained such a hold that I've lost hope of people under 18 getting honest, useful information about sexuality in a public school classroom. The right wing's refusal to teach teens or provide contraception to them is supported by flawed ideas: (1) To acknowledge that young people are sexual beings robs them of their innocence; and (2) if we give them sexual information and make condoms, latex gloves, dental dams, and birth control easily available, they will run out and have sex because we encouraged them. When the FDA approved the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine earlier this year, women's-health and reproductive-rights advocates braced for another battle engaging sexual freedom, choice, and consent.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Village Voice - By Kathryn Belgior - Jul. 11 (News Report) - Every day for a year and a half, Julia Siverls practiced an eclectic Korean style of yoga called Dahn. She started each morning with meditation and breathing exercises, then sandwiched her day job as a college professor between hours spent as a Dahn volunteer—teaching classes, distributing recruitment flyers, or researching potential locations for new centers. Julia approached her spiritual life with the same diligence she applied to everything else. Having grown up in a rough Brooklyn housing project, she went on to stack up not one but two master's degrees and a doctorate. A certificate dated July 14, 2003, signifies her crowning achievement in yoga: becoming a master instructor. Sadly, Julia could not attend the graduation ceremony held in Sedona, Arizona, at the Ilchi Meditation Center, a resort-style compound that serves as Dahn's U.S. headquarters. On July 12, at the age of 41, she died on a nearby mountain while training to be a Dahn master.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
