The Biggest Myth of the Midterms

finance.yahoo.com - By Rick Newman - Oct. 29 (Opinion) - Somewhat overlooked are these small factoids:

Obama has overseen corporate bailouts started under the Bush administration that have funneled $600 billion of taxpayer money into banks and automakers.

The Federal Reserve under Obama has inflated the stock market well above its natural level, to the great relief of the investor class.

The Fed has also kept interest rates at record lows, which punishes Main Street savers but benefits big businesses that have access to some of the cheapest money ever.

The much-derided stimulus plan kept the recession from being a lot worse, which saved many businesses on the edge and helped keep others healthy.

Obama has quietly let union-backed "card check" legislation, which would strengthen unions, drift down the Democrats' priority list.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

World Sees Obama as Incompetent and Amateur

U.S. News & World Report - By Mort Zuckerman - Jun. 18 (News Analysis) - The reviews of Obama's performance have been disappointing. He has seemed uncomfortable in the role of leading other nations, and often seems to suggest there is nothing special about America's role in the world. The global community was puzzled over the pictures of Obama bowing to some of the world's leaders and surprised by his gratuitous criticisms of and apologies for America's foreign policy under the previous administration of George W. Bush. One Middle East authority, Fouad Ajami, pointed out that Obama seems unaware that it is bad form and even a great moral lapse to speak ill of one's own tribe while in the lands of others.

Even in Britain, for decades our closest ally, the talk in the press—supported by polls—is about the end of the "special relationship" with America. French President Nicolas Sarkozy openly criticized Obama for months, including a direct attack on his policies at the United Nations. Sarkozy cited the need to recognize the real world, not the virtual world, a clear reference to Obama's speech on nuclear weapons. When the French president is seen as tougher than the American president, you have to know that something is awry. Vladimir Putin of Russia has publicly scorned a number of Obama's visions. Relations with the Chinese leadership got off to a bad start with the president's poorly-organized visit to China, where his hosts treated him disdainfully and prevented him from speaking to a national television audience of the Chinese people. The Chinese behavior was unprecedented when compared to visits by other U.S. presidents.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Republican Leaders Debate Reagan's Relevance

U.S. News & World Report - By Kenneth T. Walsh - Jul. 09 (Opinion) - Ronald Reagan still stands larger than life—7 feet tall and full of vim and vigor. Actually, it's a bronze statue of the 40th president, unveiled in the Capitol Rotunda with much fanfare in early June. But to his admirers, the ceremony and the statue were reminders that Reagan can still teach the country lessons about leadership and charisma.

Beyond the true believers, however, political leaders are increasingly debating Reagan's relevance. After the Republican Party's shellacking in the past two elections, some conservatives argue that the GOP has strayed too far from the Gipper's small-government philosophy and that it hasn't properly emphasized his goals of a strong national defense and promoting American exceptionalism. Others say the party needs to find a new generation of leaders and a new portfolio of ideas because what worked 20 years ago isn't what's called for today.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The goal is to provide more stability to the financial system, which would benefit most Americans. But such abrupt change would also cause some casualties.
